Superintendent Ginger Carrabine's 2022 Back-To-School Update to Parents & Families

August 4, 2022

Dear Bryan ISD Parents and Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already in August! I hope you are enjoying a safe and restful summer break. Our district and school leadership teams have worked diligently over the last several weeks to ensure our campuses are ready to welcome students back to school on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. I want to provide you with a few updates on some important items you need to know for the 2022-2023 school year.

Safety and Security

We remain heartbroken over the tragedy that occurred in Uvalde this past May. The safety and well-being of students and staff remain our highest priority in Bryan ISD. Our safety and security committee met this summer to review our protocols, safety upgrades from the 2019 and 2020 Bond elections, and much more to ensure that our children and staff are safe.

Bryan ISD continues to work with the Bryan police department to closely examine safety protocols and procedures and review the distribution and rotation of support provided through our School Resource Officers.  Additionally, the district has again partnered with ESC6 to conduct safety audits of each building, including preventing unauthorized access. We will not prop open doors or allow visitors to enter from the side or back of buildings. Therefore, we ask that visitors refrain from trying to enter a building from the side or back entrances.

Next, we encourage everyone to use the “Be Safe” platform to report any concerns or safety issues. This app is tied to law enforcement and Crime Stoppers, and reports can be made anonymously. If you see something, say something.

Important update on School Meals

We are pleased to inform you that Bryan ISD will continue participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program called the Community Eligibility Provision. This means that all enrolled students, regardless of income level, will receive a healthy school breakfast and lunch at no charge. For more information about school nutrition services, please visit us online at BISD Child Nutrition, or contact us at (979) 209-7052.

Importance of Student Attendance

I would also like to address the importance of student attendance as we prepare to meet the needs of our students. We are asking for your help. Since the pandemic began in March 2020, and the subsequent re-opening of campuses for in-person learning, schools across the state and nation have experienced declines in student attendance. As a school community, given the challenges associated with COVID, we understand that many have felt the need to keep their child home more frequently than before.

However, as we prepare for the next school year, we ask for your help. Knowing all students have experienced learning loss due to the pandemic, it is critically important that students be in attendance as much as possible to receive instruction. Please know that we are not asking that you send your child to school if they are ill; we know illness-related absences are sometimes unavoidable. We respectfully ask that you work with us in making an intentional effort to have your children at school each day by planning appointments and family vacations around the school district academic calendar.

Important Information for Parents

  • Bus Route Information. All bus route information will be emailed to parents on August 10th and will available in the Home Access Center (HAC) beginning on August 11th. We encourage you to download the app Here Comes the Bus for daily arrival time for your child’s bus.
  • COVID Update. TEA has recently published changes to the COVID Public Health Guidance for schools. The student or employee who tests positive for COVID may return to campus/work after at least 5 days have passed since symptoms first appeared, and fever free, and other symptoms have improved.
  • Family Events. Our schools are excited to swing the doors open and welcome our students and families. We believe that when parents and schools work together we can create a meaningful partnership that support the whole child, academically and social-emotionally.  We encourage you to join us at the multitude of Back to School events that will take place this month. Throughout the year we invite you to attend one of our fabulous Fine Arts performances as well as a multitude of Athletic events!
  • Essential Eight. Bryan ISD’s Essential Eight (E8) character traits focuses on bringing the student, parent, school, and community together to support the development of the whole child. We will begin with Kindness and ask for your partnership in teaching students the importance and impact of kindness on themselves and others.
  • Volunteering. We welcome parents and community members to volunteer in Bryan ISD schools. All volunteers must complete the background check and information form each school year. There are countless opportunities to be involved in our school community!
  • Continuous Updates. Please check us out at facebook.com/BryanISD, twitter.com/BryanISD, or instagram.com/Bryan.ISD

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school. I look forward to kicking off another great year in Bryan ISD! We will see you on August 16!

Respectfully,

Ginger Carrabine

Bryan ISD Superintendent
